In this episode we talk about how he got started, the Archibald experience and the benefits and limits of photography when using photographs as a reference in painting. Car headlights illuminate a dark country road revealing improbable markings; a coastal scene viewed through a tangle of gums unveil pink and aqua islands in the distance; a suburban setting is dominated by a flattened brick path and geometrically striped grass verge. They created work en plein air, in their hotel rooms and in their studios, documenting their impressions of what they saw and experienced. See a short video of Flint's studio and work in her latest show at Australian Galleries on the Talking with Painters YouTube channel here. Ryan lives and works in Thirroul, a coastal oasis south of Sydney, where his paintings share space with his surfboards.
He worked from job to job but never stopped drawing and ultimately realised that was what he did best.
It was fascinating to hear about the private performance she carried out within that space in order to complete the work. His work is held in most important Australian art institutions and of course many private collections. We also talk about Instagram, taking risks and her fascinating Derek Milkwood series - all with a good dose of humour. The interview was recorded in Done's harbourside home where he has his studio and lives with his wife of more than 50 years, Judy. Further touring dates TBA on exhibition website.
